Mobile computing at the edge

Grace A. Lewis · 2013

Edge environments, such as those in which first responders and military personnel operate in, are characterized by dynamic context, limited computing resources, intermittent network connectivity, and high levels of stress. First responders and soldiers can use handheld devices in these environments to help with tasks such as speech and image recognition, natural language processing, decision-making and mission planning. Unfortunately, commercial mobile solutions often do not work in these environments because they not address the challenges of being at the edge. This talk discusses a set of architecture patterns as well as open areas of research for designing and implementing mobile systems in edge environments.
