Cognitive radios methodology for dynamic spectrum allocation in broadband wireless cellular/public safety network systems

Chihkai Chen, Kung Yao · 2012

The explosive demands of real-time multimedia services in broadband wireless 4G cellular/public safety (PS) network systems impose challenges on efficient spectrum utilization. In this paper, we consider the use of cognitive radio network (CRN) methodology for distributed cooperative spectrum sensing enabling efficient dynamic spectrum allocation and management. CRs join and leave the systems under different conditions. We use the semi-Markov random process to model the dynamic behavior of the number of CR users and log-normal and Pareto distributions to model the cooperation time in the analytical derivation of the dynamic probability mass function of the number of CR's. Closed form expressions are obtained for the dynamic probabilities of detection and false alarm for cooperative spectrum sensing over fading channels for cellular and PS systems. Several simulations are provided illustrating the usefulness of these models for dynamic spectrum allocation for potential practical system analysis and design.
