The Validity of the Miller-Coleman Readability Scale
Milagros R. Aquino · Reading Research Quarterly · 1969
VALIDATES BY using word-for-word recall and subjective judgment, the Miller-Coleman Readability Scale (MCRS) which consists of 36 150-word passages. Counting earlier measures, the scale has now been calibrated using five separate indices of reading difficulty plus an Information Gain (IG) score (a score that indexes the efficiency with which a passage transmits new information). The r's between measures ranged from .89 to .94. The scale appeared to be an economical tool for preliminary correlation tests of variables hypothesized to affect reading difficulty or Information Gain (IG).
