Analyzing the textbook to improve student reading and learning

The textbook is the mainstay of the public school curriculum. This article presents five critical areas of analysis for effectively evaluating a textbook. Included are traditional criteria such as readability factors, use of concepts and illustrations. Special attention is also given to newer evaluation criteria such as matching the cognitive level of students with the cognitive level of the materials used in the text. The article provides the reader with the key questions needed to determine whether or not a textbook can be used effectively in the classroom.
