Context effects on semantic domains as seen in analogy solution.

Daniel D. Sadler, Edward Joseph Shoben · Journal of Experimental Psychology Learning Memory and Cognition · 1993

Three experiments investigated the processing of categorical information in context. Experiment 1 used multidimensional scaling techniques to identify some common and unique dimensions for a given set of occupational terms in three different contexts. The results of Experiment 2 indicate that these context-specific representations (as opposed to the general one) were used in the solution of word analogies. The results of Experiment 2 also suggest that subjects solve these word analogies by means of heuristics rather than algorithmic rules. The results of Experiment 3 support this conclusion. These findings are discussed in terms of the processing of context-dependent conceptual representations
