Data reduction and resynthesis of connected solo passages using frequency, amplitude, and “brightness” detection and the nonlinear synthesis technique

James W. Beauchamp · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1982

Several computer algorithms have been developed for the analysis and synthesis of extended musical passages of several notes played by wind instruments. The technique includes inverse filtration, frequency detection, time-variant spectrum analysis, nonlinear analysis, amplitude and “brightness” (spectral centroid) matching, and nonlinear synthesis with forward filtering. Typically, a 20-to-1 data reduction is achieved while preserving most inflections of the original passage. Problems of selecting an appropriate inverse filter and other facets of the technique will be described. Further study of the derived frequency, amplitude, and “brightness” contours may lead to improved techniques for synthesis of connected passages by rule. The possibility for warping parameters before resynthesis may be useful as a tool for music composition.
