Residue Phenomenon and Its Theoretical Implications

J.F. Schouten · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1956

A historical survey is given of the residue, both of its phenomenological properties and its implications with respect to the theory of subjective sound analysis and pitch perception. Recently published systematic investigations of the sound spectra exhibiting the residue phenomenon and of the various properties of the observed residue provide a powerful test of theoretical speculations. It must now be considered certain that the place theory in its original simple form has to be revised with respect to the attribution of pitch to stimulation of a particular area of the basilar membrane. A mechanism must exist at or beyond each area of the basilar membrane that attributes different pitches to different wave forms stimulating that area.
