Investigation of the efficiency of multi-variable block transforms for motion compensation

P.S. Milburn · 1994

Motion estimation is an important facet of image sequence processing primarily for reducing the amount of data for transmission. This is of prime importance in bandwidth limited systems such as terrestrial television and videophones, The paper discusses the use of block matching which is the most common means of performing motion compensation. A new technique called the multi-variable block transform is introduced and its performance is compared with a number of block matching procedures.
