Embedded & Graphics DRAMs

Katsuyuki Sato, Joo Sun Choi · 2008

Historically, the DRAM industry focuses on increasing density for commodity devices with advances measured by the constant rise in the number of bits per chip. This trend is reaching a roadblock and research and development interest is shifting towards improving performance for multimedia applications. This change is also driven by the rising importance of embedded and high-speed graphics applications. In these applications, bandwidth is king both within and between dice. In response on-die embedded macros are pushing performance, but this in itself is not adequate. The power and cost budgets pose constant challenges for the eDRAM designer when trying to satisfy consumer demands. Addressing these requirements; embedded DRAM-macros are at the center-stage of the first half of todays session. The presentations showcase interesting new developments that promise to open up new applications for eDRAMs.
