Models and metaphors: Formalizations of music
André Riotte · Contemporary Music Review · 1989
From theoretical formalizations to computer models, a “modeling” approach is becoming more widespread among researchers working along the chain extending from the conception of music to its perception. Based on various approaches described in this volume, this article seeks to clarify the levels on which models now being developed actually function, by comparing them to the metaphorical approach often cited by composers as stimulating their creative processes. These two attitudes seem to have points in common, and both scientists and artists resort to each in turn.
