The Japan connection

Mr. E. Floyd Kvamme, Executive Vice-President of Apple Computer, offered some very interesting insights on the Japanese and United States computing industries in the first plenary session of CCMS/10. Mr. Kvamme visited Japan about 50 times in the last 15 years and feels that much of what has been written about the Japanese is incorrect. He began his presentation with a quick history of the development of semi-conductor technology and computing in the United States and in Japan. He followed with an elaboration on what he sees as essential elements of the Japanese plan:1. Competition breeds success.2. Creativity, not efficiency, brings productivity.3. Quality is directly related to the tools available to employees.
