Time-domain acoustic characteristics of allophones and phonological phenomena
Janet M. Baker · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1974
Time-domain up-crossing analysis is useful for deriving acoustic characteristics of certain allophones as well as acoustical correlates of certain phonological phenomena. Parameters used singly and in combination in this analysis include, among others, measures of the period of each cycle, amplitude, and the microstructure of each cycle in the waveform. Allophones of the fricatives and stop consonants have been extensively studied using this technique. Since the phones of connected speech often occur in reduced form, time-domain methods are especially appropriate for both detecting and characterizing these transients.
