Some Statistical Characteristics of Subordinate Clauses
Marvin H. Folsom, Alvin C. Rencher · Phonetica · 1972
Abstract With respect to the number of finite verbs in subordinate clauses within a text, we have demonstrated for the material examined that the variable: (a) differs significantly for the prose of detective stories and the prose exemplified by WINTER’s data (reservation as noted below); (b) differs significantly between authors; (c) is relatively consistent within a single author of detective stories with only an occasional exeption; and (d) when examined throughout a book, is subject to at least two different types of nonrandomness.
