Graphic representations of complex tones

Dewey T. Lawson · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1980

An alternative to standard spectral plots has been developed for graphic representation of complex tones to students of musical acoustics. Based on intervals rather than component tones, this representation offers pedagogical and analytical advantages, particularly when musical transposition is considered. Examples will be given of its use in representing complex intervals and chords, discussing perceptual data, and carrying out various types of consonance analysis.
