Results of the Graduate Workshop on Education in Acoustics

Michael J. Oslac · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1973

At the Miami meeting of the Acoustical Society a special workshop was held on education in acoustics. This workshop was sponsored by the Education in Acoustics Committee with organization and participation coming from five graduate students in acoustics programs in various universities in the United States. The workshop attempted to identify, from the propsective graduate's point of view, those areas in acoustics which will be of major importance in the next decade and their relationship to incorporation into the academic community to fulfill the needs of the graduate. The consensus was that “acoustic specialization did not permit the more highly motivated graduate student to obtain the required breadth for entering tomorrow's fields of acoustics and that the required departmental regimentation be reevaluated to reflect this more diverse thinking.” The four major areas discussed at the workshop will be presented as well as the conclusions drawn from the discussion period.
