Amplitude distributions of smoothed inverse-repeat binary sequences

G.H. Tomlinson · International Journal of Electronics · 1988

An inverse-repeat binary sequence (IRS) can be formed by inverting every other term of an m-sequence. The merits of using an IRS as a pseudorandom noise source in various applications are discussed. The statistical properties of the smoothed IRS are analysed with particular attention to the variations that occur for different characteristic polynomials. By consideration of moments, a systematic relationship is derived between the amplitude distribution and the characteristic polynomial. This leads to a criterion for selection of an optimum IRS for a particular application.
