Subjective attributes that influence judgments of digital transmission quality

B. McDermott · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1978

The ultimate test of the success of a digital technique for speech transmission is the quality of the speech as evaluated by unbiased listeners. The variety of methods for digital encoding, as well as the numerous design parameters for each method, have produced many new and different types of degradations in the transmitted speech signal. The identification and relative importance of the subjective attributes associated with each type of codec is a necessary step in understanding the quality of the reproduced speech signal. If particular atributes can be associated with certain design parameters, the relationship can provide valuable information to the design engineer. The manner in which the various attributes are combined and weighted by listeners serves as a guide for establishing the validity of objective measures to predict overall subjective quality.
