Bayes Estimates for Subclasses in Stratified Sampling
Alastair Scott, Timothy M. Smith · Journal of the American Statistical Association · 1971
In sample surveys estimates are often required for subclasses of the population. The usual results assume that the domain numbers, Mi, are either known exactly or completely unknown. The case where there is some prior knowledge is examined in detail from a Bayesian viewpoint using the Polya distribution to represent the prior information about Mi. The resulting estimate is a weighted average of the prior and sample estimates containing the usual results as extreme cases.
