Abstract This paper proposes a new compression method which uses a sliding window with an Lempel‐Ziv‐Welch (LZW) dictionary. When an LZW phrase is constructed, the location of the phrase on the window is also recorded in the dictionary. Using this information, there are cases where we can find that a new LZW phrase is already included in the sliding window. If the current input matches the string on the window longer than the LZW phrase constructed, the length of the string is encoded instead of the phrase itself. For most kinds of inputs, the compression performance of this method is better than the original LZW method and is equal or superior to various improved LZW methods. In addition, compared with that of the LZW method, the execution time of this method increases only about 25 percent.
