The DO WHILE reconsidered

Cooper Redwine · ACM SIGPLAN Fortran Forum · 1993

The article "Using the Fortran 90 DO WHILE," by Edward Reid ( Fortran Forum, Vol. 12, No. 2, June 1993) started me thinking again about the issue of loop control. The article seems to encourage Fortran 90 programmers to try to think of loop control in terms of the do while, which is a very different viewpoint from that taken by the first two Fortran 90 books I read, both of which appeared to discourage its use under any conditions. I suppose that over the years I have come to take the do while pretty much for granted, so I was rather surprised by the attitudes of all these authors. In order to try to reconcile these writings with my own knowledge and experience, I decided to put down on paper some of my thoughts on the subject.
