An expert system for the teaching of income tax in the accounting curriculum

The potential uses of expert systems make them as exciting as, if not more promising than, spreadsheet applications (Franciosa, 1990). Expert systems are computer programmes that emulate the thinking processes of human experts in solving problems in a specialized area. Recently it was suggested that this new technology should be introduced to the accounting curriculum due to its wide industrial applications and its potential as a training tool for accounting students (Sangster, 1991). This paper explores the possibility of introducing expert systems to the accounting curriculum through identifying an area of application related to income tax computations and suggests a method for developing such an expert system as a tool for training.
