Reduction of long-time reverberation by center clipping

O. M. M. Mitchell, G. H. Yates, Thomas B. Bateman · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1975

We have investigated use of center clipping to reduce effects of long-time reverberation of speech. Center clipping in contiguous bands allows harmonic distortion to be avoided at the output. Previous studies used six 23-octave bands with fixed clipping levels [O.M.M. Mitchell and D.A. Berkley, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 47, 84 (A) (1970)]. We have obtained improved performance by the use of a simpler center clipping system that adapts to varying input speech levels. This system has been realized both in digital simulation and in real-time analog circuitry. Output tapes showing the effect of processing speech recorded in an auditorium and a small office will be played.
