Novanet: a fiber-optic network for control systems

Jonathan R. Hill, J. R. Severyn, Paul J. Van Arsdall · 1982

Novanet is a fiber-optic local network that provides communications for the control system of a large laser research facility. Nova is a 300-TW laser system that will be used for inertial confinement fusion experiments at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The Nova control system consists of 4 VAX-11/780 computers, ~50 LSI-11 computers, and 30 assorted devices that include digital cameras and transient digitizers. The communications network that connects these diverse nodes is a bit serial fiber-optic bus whose line speed is 10 Mbit/sec.
