A simple integrating device for the routine statistical analysis of recorded data
John R. Gerhardt · Transactions American Geophysical Union · 1950
The exorbitant amount of labor involved in the routine statistical analysis of recorded data can be reduced considerably by the use of a simple integrating mechanism. For thermistor measurements of temperature in particular, a series of ten electric clocks controlled by contacts on a 50‐pole commutator, each of whose poles is equivalent to a temperature change of 0.5°C, indicates the time that the temperature has remained within any of ten successive 0.5°C intervals. Two calculations are all that are then required to obtain the mean and standard deviation of the original record. The maximum response delay of the equipment is about four seconds for temperature changes up to 5°C. Sample statistical analyses are presented.
