Purposes and practices of text retrieval

Retrieval from full-text systems is a more complex process than traditional retrieval activities. To reach the level of sophistication required for satisfactory full-text retrieval therefore entails moving beyond approaches aimed at (say) standard bibliographical databases. In part this implies looking at all the components of a text for their potential retrieval value, but, more importantly, it means an analysis of context, and so of meaning. The current emphasis in system development is on iterative techniques which automatically modify searches in the light of user feedback
