Georg Katzer, born in 1935, studied composition under Rudolf Wagner-Régeny and Ruth Zechlin in Berlin, as well as at the Academy of Musical Arts in Prague. He then completed his master studies under Hanns Eisler at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, of which he became a member in 1978. Later, he received a professorship and led a master class at the Akademie der Künste. There, in 1986, he established a studio for electroacoustic music. He has completed works in all musical genres.
