Intelligent manufacturing systems-systems with decision making capabilities similar to those of a human-require data to support the decision-making process. This paper describes an approach for a database design that is adequate for the needs of intelligent manufacturing systems. The database design includes the establishment of a data model which in this work is based on the entity relationship concept. The design also includes a data manipulation mechanism that provides the data to the system's decision making modules with adequate speed and form. After a brief discussion of various data modelling concepts, the proposed conceptual manufacturing data model is described. Furthermore, the data manipulation mechanism is schematically discussed and the experimental implementation of the entire database design is briefly described.
