This paper examines the performance of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation techniques used in conjunction with a multiple beam antenna for resolving multiple sources. We show that several techniques available in the literature, though generally designed for use with a phased array, can be used successfully with arrays having arbitrary geometries and directional characteristics. The techniques considered are Minimum Variance (MV), linear prediction (LP), MUSIC, and MinNorm. We examined the capability of the techniques for resolving two closely spaced sources, for resolving many randomly placed sources, and for resolving many closely spaced sources. The experiments showed that the MV, LP, MUSIC, and MinNorm superresolution techniques gave superior performance in resolving multiple sources over conventional beamforming, with MUSIC and MinNorm generally producing better estimates than LP, which produced better estimates than MV.
