New curve‐fitting method for analysis of flood‐records

John C. Geyer · Transactions American Geophysical Union · 1940

The new curve‐fitting technique described provides a direct and simple method for statistical analysis of the upper portion of the true frequency‐series of flood‐rises on any stream. The method is based only on the assumption that if the frequency‐behavior of floods follows some uniform law it should be possible to express this law mathematically. Since a curve drawn by eye is sufficiently accurate for.determining magnitudes whose frequencies are less than the length of the record, the primary reason for deriving a mathematical expression of behavior is to enable extrapolation of the curve in order to determine the magnitude of very infrequent floods.
