JFDV Attack: Influence on Workability of Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

Avani Sharma, Rajbir Kaur, Purnendu Karmakar · 2014

Attacks are common in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) due to characteristics like open medium, dynamically changing network topology, node mobility and internode trust. Malicious nodes in MANET may not comply with the protocol specification of a particular layer. Malicious nodes may exploit the inherent vulnerability to launch an attack. In this paper, we analyze a protocol compliant JellyFish Delay Variance (JFDV) attack, launched at network layer. In this attack, the malicious node includes itself in route to destination and participates in data forwarding. But, malicious node delays data packet while forwarding it to upstream nodes. This behavior of malicious node affects throughput of the network. Effect of JFDV attack with reactive protocol has been investigated in existing literature. We analyze the effect of JFDV attack using both reactive and proactive protocols. We investigate that characteristics of proactive protocols make them resistant to JFDV attack as compare to reactive protocols.
