Abstract A method to design ARMA digital filters is proposed in which simultaneous specifications of magnitude and group‐delay are used. The properties of rational transfer function of z, and unique relation of magnitude and group‐delay response of minimum/maximum phase transfer function are presented. A design procedure is described based on these characteristics. The method consists of the Levinson‐Durbin algorithm and fast Fourier transform, which makes it very efficient in obtaining a recursive filter that has arbitrary magnitude and group‐delay responses. An example is illustrated for comparison with group‐delay compensation.
