College campus hate speech codes: A personal view from an absolute perspective

“Hate speech” and efforts to eliminate it have preoccupied many American communities and colleges during the last decade. As a result, some institutions have turned to statutes and campus codes designed to prevent or punish racially motivated hate speech and expression. This paper traces the legal and social history of those regulatory efforts and argues that deregulation and counter speech provide better alternatives.
