Abstract This paper discusses the information processing ability of the cascade network of threshold elements, which is a fundamental structure to realize a piecewise‐linear machine. the upper bounds for the number of dichotomies and the separating capacity are determined for that type of network, where theory of equivalent transformation from cascade network to two‐layered network is utilized positively. As a result, it is shown that the upper bound for the separating capacity of the cascade network consisting of k threshold elements is given by 2k(n + 1), where n is the dimension of the patterns to be classified.
