Washing Your Laundry in Public — An Analysis of Recent High-Publicity Security Incidents

There is, reportedly, a significant rise in the frequency of information security incidents. Quite obviously, there is a very significant rise in the public reporting of such incidents. Whereas all of us are more or less experienced in protecting our systems against intruders, do we all have experience in post-incident handling — both technically and in terms of the executive and public relations involved? Remember, your customers may not understand the basics of the technology used to provide the services or goods they desire, never mind the technical details of obscure security incidents. Let’s examine a number of recent high publicity security incidents for both technical and handling details.
