LISP on a reduced-instruction-set-processor

£bstraet We ported the Pmtable Standard Lisp compiler to MIPS-X, a reduc_~-instmction-ast processor. In this paper we repo~ on a number of pmf'fling measure, eats made on a set of 11 LISP pmsrmm. The measurements give information on two levels, lrust, we look at what instructions LISP prosrmm use at the assembly level.Because the inmuction set of MIPS-X coutains only ve~ simple, basic ins~ctions, the profilin~ information is at a very low level. In a second group of measmements, we determine how much time each program spends on the most common primitive LISP operations.Because MIPS-X executes all machine inmections in a single cycle, it is poas~ie to get very accurate tlmi~ measmements by instruction counts.
