Still picture filing/transmitting system has been developed using a ISO standardized 5.25 inches Magneto-Optical (MO) disk drive. In this system many types of information such as voice, image and document are easily recorded on the MO disk by a host computer. Still picture data, especially, can be compressed to 1/12 of the original data without degradation, using an Adaptive Vector Quantization (AVQ) technique. Users can file about 9000 still color pictures whose resolution is 512 pixels × 480 lines on one disk, and transmit these data on a telephone line.
