This paper explains the components of the following definition for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI): A standard set of protocols or rules that, when implemented, will enable computers of different manufacturers, using different types of internal programs, to communicate with each other, as equals, with minimal prior negotiation. It also examines the seven layers of OSI with concentration on those activities of interest to libraries.
