A Comparison of Four Types of Spelling Tests for Diagnostic Purposes
Joe E. Moore · The Journal of Experimental Education · 1937
The spelling ability of children is deter mined ordinarily by tests of some kind. The basic assumption behind most of these diag nostic tests is that they will determine whether or not a child can spell a word in a specific situation. In turn, the way a spelling test predicts a pupil's ability to spell a word depends upon two factors: the reliability of the test as a diagnostic instrument and the variability of the subject taking the test. Obviously, then, it is important to know what type of test should be applied in order to obtain the most reliable measure of a pupil's misspelling.
