Windows 7 planning and implementation

Gale D. Fritsche · 2010

Lehigh University began planning for the arrival of Windows 7 in the fall of 2009. As with any operating system upgrade, there are many steps that need carefully planned and many questions answered in order to reduce problems for the technical staff as well as end users. What does the arrival of Windows 7 mean to your organization? How are you going to plan for a smooth transition to Windows 7? How should your organization approach the implementation of Windows 7? During the past year, over 100 applications were tested at Lehigh on various computing platforms, with many successes as well as failures. Current hardware needs were analyzed and decisions were made on issues such as; what version should be used -- 32 bit or 64 bit? The needs of the University faculty and students must first be addressed with a close look at budgetary restraints as well as administrative overhead. This paper will outline and discuss the best practices for the implementation of Windows 7 and will address the many issues and challenges faced during the year.
