One of the first HP 3800B Distance Meters to reach Britain was delivered to the Royal School of Mines shortly before Easter 1972. Since that time the instrument has been used for a variety of purposes, but most heavily during field courses with undergraduate and postgraduate students. As a result of this usage some comments on the equipment and its accuracy can be made.
