Performance-Intensity Characteristics of Selected Verbal Materials

Charles Speaks · Journal of Speech and Hearing Research · 1967

Performance-intensity functions for synthetic-sentence message sets were compared with analogous functions for spondaic words and for phonetically balanced monosyllabic words. Four trained listeners with normal hearing were tested. The function for sentences was slightly steeper than the function for spondaic words and markedly steeper than the function for PB words. The levels corresponding to 50% correct response were 16.1 dB for sentences, 20.2 dB for spondaic words, and 26.4 dB for PB words.
