Academic software
Steven W. Gilbert · ACM SIGCUE Outlook · 1986
Note: In pages that follow, "computer software," "academic software," etc. refer only to microcomputer software. Minicomputer software and mainframe computer software are subject to different constraints from those associated with the smaller machines. We recognize the continuing significance and impact of PLATO, authoring systems, and other large-scale CAI projects; however, dealing with them explicitly is beyond the scope of this paper. As the networking of microcomputers on campuses (and between campuses) continues, the economics associated with software for micros will have even more in common with that of the larger systems now in place.
