Deriving multiplication‐type FVQ/HMM from a new information‐source model and a viewpoint of information theory, and the relation of the model to discrete and continuous HMMs

Abstract In this paper the author formulates HMM from the standpoint of information theory. Based on this formulation, a multiplication‐type FVQ/HMM previously proposed by the author is derived from the inevitable results. In addition, conventional discrete and continuous HMMs can also be derived from this formulation, and are shown to represent special cases of the multiplication‐type FVQ/HMM. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
