On the effective use of the individual programmer and the programming team
Stephen W. Smoliar, Lynne Weber · 1977
The effective structuring of programming teams must be viewed as a managerial problem of organizational design. Finding individuals who are skilled in the techniques necessary for a programming task is only a partial solution to this problem. A collection of skilled individuals does not necessarily constitute an effective team. Anyone who has ever worked on a team, successfully or unsuccessfully, can appreciate the importance of interaction among team members and how this interaction can aid or disrupt a project. Effective team structuring involves an understanding of how the behavior of individual team members will contribute to the interaction patterns which determine the behavior of the team.
