The complexity of living like a snail – the dangers of the ‘fuzzy boundary’

Wendy Goucher · Computer Fraud & Security · 2008

The fuzzy boundary is an area of dynamic vulnerability on the outside of the technical protection of the organisational network. There are a number of factors which contribute to the vulnerability: some are within the control of the business itself and some are not, but need to be considered. In modern business, much time and finance is dedicated to protecting the boundaries of the network. Consideration is paid to boundary fencing in the form of firewalls and anti-virus protection; and encryption can provide assurance for the safe movement of information external to our control and influence. The effectiveness of protective systems can be monitored, reviewed, and revised in keeping with changes in threat profile and approach.
