The Authorship of The Raigne of King Edward the Third

M. W. A. Smith · Literary and Linguistic Computing · 1991

Literary perception and evaluation has in general considered Edward III to be the anonymous play most likely to have been written, at least in substantial part, by Shakespeare Applying a stylometric method developed primarily for investigating problems of authorship of plays of the period, Edward III, in its entirety, is discovered to exhibit a greater affinity to Shakespeare than to any of eight contemporaneous dramatists. It is suggested that the independence and objectivity of the stylometric evidence could therefore tilt the balance in favour of incorporating this play into the Shakespeare canon.
