The present paper describes the development of a collaborative information management system among a set of related hospital services. By integrating stand alone microcomputers using a minicomputer as a passive file server in a distributive network, this system provides an efficient means of meeting the data needs of both small, specialized hospital services and those of larger, parent departments. Advantages of this design strategy over local area networks and mainframe applications are discussed.
