Summary In a gambling situation we have studied the respective influence of payoffs and objective uncertainty on the latency and confidence of the subject's responses. Results showed that uncertainty is the main determinant of confidence. Payoffs reduced confidence but this effect was not statis-tically significant. The data confirmed those recorded in previous expe-riments and seemed to substantiate the relation between confidence and cognitive processing of information. It is doubtful that confidence depended only upon the final decision process.
