Distributed object-oriented network architecture (DONA) was designed to satisfy the demands that will be placed on future communication networks. These demands will include economical operation, flexibility, high performance, and high functionality. In DONA, the control and switching subsystems of conventional nodes are physically separated, and a new high-performance control node controls several remote switching nodes in the background by using technologies based on the remarkable progress made in processors and distributed processing. This article describes a network based on the DONA concept of separating the control and switching nodes, discusses the simulated performance characteristics of this “DONA-α” network, and considers possible ways to improve its performance. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Electron Comm Jpn Pt 1, 83(7): 81–91, 2000
