Surveillance technology and law: the social impact

Pieter Kleve, Richard V. De Mulder, Kees van Noortwijk · International Journal of Intercultural Information Management · 2007

In this paper, attention will first be paid briefly to surveillance technology as such. An attempt will be made to sketch out the extent and limitations of the techniques. Given the increasing interest in surveillance technology, an examination is made of the permissibility of the use of this technology, taking certain constitutional and legal rights into account. What is the role of supervisory technology within the context of wider social developments? The paper reaches the conclusion that, with the increasing use and significance of surveillance technology, the importance of 'monitoring the surveillors' will increase as well.
